Typical Dutch Stuff

Welcome to the Typical Dutch Stuff newsletter!

We admit, it has been a while since our last newsletter and quite a lot has changed since you last heard from us! Somewhere in this newsletter you will be able to find a discount code; grab yourself a bargain and use it for your Sinterklaas purchases!

It is October, which means it is breast cancer awareness month. As we do every year, we will donate 10% of our total proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Wear Pink this Month!

October also means that the holiday season is approaching. We have already added our Sinterklaas selection to the website and you can now place your order. Be sure to order in time if you want to receive your goodies before "Sinterklaasavond". Please keep in mind that the chocolate letters tend to sell out pretty quickly ("als zoete broodjes")!

Sinterklaas goodies

Our Sinterklaas goodies have arrived. Our shelves are filled with chocolate letters, pepernoten, and speculaas! Our Sinterklaas surprise gift was a huge success last year, simply because it makes the perfect present!

New products

We have added quite a few new products to the website and we will only be adding more! We have started a partnership with Dutch jewellery designer Ingrid ter Beek. We will be featuring her pieces on our website. You can expect beautiful bracelets, necklaces, and earrings in typically Delfts Blue designs.

Other new items include a speculaasplank, which allows you to bake your very own speculaas and forms a great gift for the holidays as well.

We also carry the new Senseo Cafe Latte coffeemaker and our new "Kleine Kadootjes" are perfect gifts to add a touch of Dutch to every occasion.

Kroketten, Frikandellen..

We are finalizing a partnership that will allow us to ship kroketten, frikandellen, and other frozen goods at very reasonable rates. We are thrilled about this, because we know that a lot of our customers would love to be able to order these products. As soon as everything is finalized ("the puntjes op de 'i' gezet"), we will send out a quick note to spread the word.

Recipe of the Month

We thought it would be fun to share our favorite Dutch recipes with our subscribers. We would love to receive some feedback and photos would be highly appreciated!

Hete bliksem: Apple and Potato Mash
Serves 4. Preparation: approx. 40 min.

What you'll need:
500g / 1lb sweet apples (Elstar)
500g /1lb tangy apples (Cox Orange Pippin)
1kg / 2lb potatoes, peeled and cut into pieces
300g smoked bacon, in one piece
25g / 1oz butter
300g / 10oz minced beef and pork
salt and freshly ground pepper
50ml / 2 fl oz milk
pinch ground cloves
pinch cinnamon

How to do it:
Peel, core, and chop the apples. Put the potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with water. Scatter the chopped apples over the potatoes and place the smoked bacon on top. Partially cover and cook about 25 minutes until tender.

In a frying pan, heat the butter and stir-fry the mince until brown and tender. Season to taste.

Drain the potatoes and apples and remove the bacon from the pan. Dice the bacon. In a saucepan, heat the milk with the cloves and cinnamon.

Mash the potatoes and apple to a puree. Add just enough spiced milk to make a creamy mash. Add the mince and diced bacon and serve immediately.

Eet smakelijk!
