We are happy to
present you with our collection of Sinterklaas candy! Sinterklaas is a
Dutch holiday, which is celebrated on December 4,5, and 6th, although "Sinterklaas Avond (Eve)" is only celebrated on the 5th. It is basically meant for
the little ones, just like Christmas is, and it is also celebrated nationwide by young and old, christian and non-christian, and without any religious overtones.
A few weeks before his
holiday, "Sinterklaas" comes to Holland on his steamer with all his
"zwarte pieten," and the presents which they prepared in Spain during the
year. This event can be seen on Dutch television. From his arrival in
Holland until his holiday, the kids can put their shoes in front of the
fireplace. At night, "Sinterklaas" visits all the houses by
travelling over the roofs on his horse, traditionally white/grey (called
"Schimmel" in Dutch), along with "zwarte piet". They enter the houses through the
chimney to put the presents in the shoes. Sometimes, the
kids put straw, carrots, and water near the shoe for the
horse.
